The Stabilization Group (TSG) is committed to stabilization and development in conflict, post-conflict, and crisis regions throughout Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

We believe the economic and political success of a region depends upon making opportunities for peaceful governance and economic possibilities available at the local level. Our efforts to build opportunities for economic and political growth by beginning with investment in the grassroots of villages and neighborhoods follow three primary areas of focus: community development, locally inspired sustainable building practices, and renewable energy solutions. Community Development

TSG's community development sector focuses on improving local governance, assisting community development programs and implementing capacity building initiatives. TSG is able to synchronize community development efforts with standing national or international development strategies to guarantee local results.

Renewable Energy

To enhance community development and economic growth potential in developing areas, TSG integrates proven solar, wind and micro-hydroelectric technologies tailored to meet small to medium scale needs at the grassroots level in regions which have historically lacked access to consistent sources of power.

TSG's sustainable building practices include:

Who We Are

TSG is a veteran-owned, U.S. based company conceived on the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan. The founders worked closely with military, civilian government, non-profit, and private development organizations in the stabilization of target areas through micro-grant initiatives, infrastructure development and implementation of renewable energy projects.

Michael R. Schraft - President and Co-founderCo-founded The Stabilization Group (TSG) after thirteen years in the federal government serving in the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Peace Corps, U.S. State Department and USAID. He is responsible for the long-term strategic vision of the company and assists in all donor funded activities. His international development experience includes service in Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He holds a BA in Political Science from Buffalo State College, and an MPA from Binghamton University. Michael is working towards his Ph.D at University at Buffalo focusing on post-conflict reconstruction and stabilization in the Political Science Department. Nicholas D. Karnaze - Chief Executive Officer and Co-founderCo-founded The Stabilization Group (TSG) after serving more than eleven years on active duty as a Marine Corps Special Operations Officer and Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Intelligence Officer. In conjunction with the President, he defines TSG's vision, long-term strategy and assists in all donor funded activities. He is responsible for strategic growth and management of TSG's U.S.-based operations and in-country implementing teams. Mr. Karnaze has extensive experience managing programs in complex environments across Central and Eastern Asia. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Political Science. Robert J. Smith - Senior Agriculture Advisor and Liaison to North Africa Mr. Smith is based out of Cairo, Egypt and is responsible for business development throughout North Africa and the Middle East. He serves as TSG’s Senior Agriculture and Agribusiness Advisor providing expertise in program design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation. He has over 25 years experience as a USAID Field Program Officer, agribusiness development officer, importer/exporter, and international business development. Mr. Smith is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Pennsylvania State University. Matthew James Harker - Senior Health Technology AdvisorMatthew has held operational roles in global and military supply chain management, manufacturing systems, technology development, and public health administration. He attended the Air Force Academy, Boise State University, Northwest Nazarene University for his BS(Industrial Engineering/Psychology) and MBA degrees. His Masters of Public Health was completed at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and he keeps his certification as an IT systems engineer current. Mr. Harker is a Director of Information Technology, Planning, and Research Administration at Duke University Medical Center. His scope of work focuses on public health projects in the fields of surgery, emergency medicine, palliative care medicine, disease registries, systems architecture, and deployment in a variety of operational health settings. Mr. Harker has recently taken on planning of Duke Global Health's health research fellowship in Tanzania and collaborative agreements in Singapore and Ghana. He has worked on DOD contracts in partnerships with the VA focused on PTSD research for our troops returning home in need of more innovative interventions. Ben Siepel - Senior Economic Development AdvisorResponsible for structuring and advising on economic development plans in emerging markets. Mr. Siepel has worked on four continents in roles ranging from economic planning in Brazil, to strategy consulting in the UK, sustainable development of mega-real estate projects in Dubai, and most recently economic development in Afghanistan. He has his BA in International Studies from Allegheny College, and his MBA from the London Business School. Dr. Demetrios N. Kyriacou - Lead Health AdvisorProfessor of Emergency Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. His Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees are from the University of Michigan. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in epidemiology from the UCLA School of Public Health. In addition, Dr. Kyriacou has a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of London (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) and has extensive consulting and research experience regarding HIV/AIDS programs across Africa.

Renewable Renewable EnergyDeveloping and crisis regions rarely have access to consistent sources of power. Such restrictions limit both community and economic growth potential. The Stabilization Group is capable of integrating proven solar, wind, and micro-hydroelectric technologies specially tailored to answer small-medium scale needs at the grassroots level. Technologies • Solar Solutions: TSG programs provide solar power for individual structures, groups of structures with connection to an existing grid, or create micro-grids to support small villages. • Wind Solutions: At higher elevations and coastal regions, wind is often the most effective RE solution. We provide both small and medium scale wind turbines that power individual structures or small-scale wind farms to provide electricity to clusters of buildings. • Micro-Hydro Solutions: In areas with continuous access to flowing water, micro-hydro units are by far the most effective power solution. Requiring little maintenance, micro-hydro systems can provide years of uninterrupted electricity to individual homes and small villages.
